Select or enter a tip percentage. Common rates are pre-set: 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, and 25%. 3. Enter the number of people splitting the bill. 4. Instantly see: tip amount, total bill with tip, amount per person, and tip per person. 5. Round up or down per person using the toggle if you prefer to pay in whole amounts. How Much Should You Tip? Restaurants (sit-down) — 15 to 20 percent is standard in the US. 20 percent is common for good service, 25 percent for exceptional. In many other countries tipping at restaurants is smaller or optional. Food delivery — 10 to 15 percent or a flat amount of 3 to 5 dollars minimum, depending on distance and order size. Delivery drivers often earn low base wages and depend on tips. Bar service — 1 to 2 dollars per drink, or 15 to 20 percent of the total tab. Hotel housekeeping — 2 to 5 dollars per night left daily, not just at checkout, since different staff may clean your room each day. Taxi and rideshare — 10 to 20 percent. Some rideshare apps suggest default amounts. Coffee and quick service — No obligation, but 1 dollar or rounding up is appreciated for regular or complex orders. Tip Calculation Formula: Tip amount = Bill amount x (Tip percentage / 100) Total = Bill amount + Tip amount Per person = Total / Number of people The tool handles all edge cases: uneven splits, rounding, and custom percentages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tip calculated before or after tax?

Traditionally tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. However many people find it easier to tip on the total including tax and the difference is small. Our calculator lets you enter whichever amount you have in front of you — pre-tax subtotal or total with tax — and calculates the tip on that amount.

What is a good tip percentage for a restaurant?

In the United States, 15 percent is considered the minimum for adequate service, 18 to 20 percent is standard for good service, and 20 to 25 percent for excellent service. In other countries tipping customs vary widely — in Japan tipping is not customary, while in the UK 10 to 12.5 percent is typical at restaurants.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

This tool calculates an even split per person. For uneven splits where different people ordered different amounts, the fairest approach is to calculate each person's share of the bill, then each person adds their proportional tip. Alternatively use the total tip amount and divide it however your group agrees.

Should I tip on the discounted price or the original price?

If you are using a discount, coupon, or promotional offer, it is generally considered good etiquette to tip on the original pre-discount price. The server provided the same level of service regardless of the discount, and the discount comes from the restaurant, not from the server's wages.

Is it rude not to tip?

In countries with a strong tipping culture like the United States, not tipping or tipping below 15 percent is considered rude except in cases of genuinely poor service. In the US, tipped workers often earn a lower base minimum wage with the expectation that tips make up the difference. In other countries tipping norms differ significantly.
