How to use Discount Calculator
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate 20 percent off a price?
Multiply the original price by 0.20 to get the discount amount, then subtract from the original price. For a 150 dollar item: 150 x 0.20 = 30 dollars off, so the sale price is 120 dollars. Alternatively multiply by 0.80 directly to get the sale price in one step. Our calculator does this instantly for any percentage.
Are two discounts of 10 percent and 20 percent the same as 30 percent off?
No. Stackable discounts are applied sequentially, not added together. On a 100 dollar item: 10 percent off gives 90 dollars, then 20 percent off 90 gives 72 dollars. That is 28 percent total discount, not 30 percent. The order of applying the discounts does not matter — the result is the same either way.
How do I find the original price if I only know the sale price and discount?
Use Mode 3 in this calculator — enter the sale price and the discount percentage, and the tool calculates the original price. The formula is: original price = sale price divided by (1 minus the discount as a decimal). For a 75 dollar item that was 25 percent off: 75 divided by 0.75 equals 100 dollars original price.
Is the discount applied before or after tax?
In most countries discounts are applied to the pre-tax price, and then sales tax is calculated on the discounted price. So a 100 dollar item with 20 percent off becomes 80 dollars, and then tax is added on 80 dollars. However some promotional pricing shows final prices inclusive of tax — check the retailer terms to be sure.
How do I verify if a sale discount is accurate?
Enter the original listed price and the sale price into Mode 2 of this calculator. It will show you the actual percentage off. This is useful for checking whether a retailer inflated the original price before applying the discount, a practice sometimes called a fake sale or reference pricing.
