How to use Sales Tax Calculator
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate sales tax on a price?
Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate as a decimal. For example, $50 at 8% tax: $50 × 0.08 = $4 tax, total = $54. Our calculator does this instantly — just enter the price and rate and select "Add Tax."
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the tax-inclusive total by (1 + tax rate as decimal). For 8% tax: $54 ÷ 1.08 = $50 original price. This is the correct reverse calculation — many people incorrectly subtract 8% of the gross total which gives the wrong answer. Our "Remove Tax" mode handles this correctly.
Which US states have no sales tax?
Five US states have no state sales tax: Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska. However, Alaska allows local municipalities to levy their own sales taxes, so some Alaskan cities do have local taxes. When selecting these states in the calculator, the rate will be 0%.
What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?
Sales tax (US model) is added at the point of sale by the retailer and is not included in the displayed price. VAT (EU, UK, and most countries) is built into the displayed price and applied at every stage of production. For consumers the end effect is similar — you pay extra. For businesses, VAT accounting is more complex.
Why does my final price sometimes differ from what the store charges?
Stores often round to the nearest cent, and some jurisdictions have specific rounding rules. Additionally, some items (food, medicine, clothing) are exempt from sales tax in certain states, and local city/county taxes may apply on top of the state rate shown.
