Frequently Asked Questions
What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a destination-based, multi-stage indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services. India introduced GST on 1 July 2017, replacing a complex web of central excise duty, VAT, service tax, and other levies with a single unified national tax. Most countries that use GST or VAT follow a similar structure.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are levied equally on intra-state transactions — each is half the total GST rate. On an 18% intra-state transaction, CGST is 9% and SGST is 9%, collected by the central and state government respectively. IGST (Integrated GST) applies to inter-state and import transactions and equals the full GST rate, collected by the central government.
Which GST rates are supported?
This calculator supports all four standard GST slabs: 5% (essentials including packaged foods, transport, and small restaurants), 12% (processed foods, business-class travel, and certain goods), 18% (most goods and services including IT, telecom, and financial services), and 28% (luxury goods, aerated beverages, and automobiles). The nil (0%) rate requires no calculation.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
To extract GST from a price that already includes tax: Base price = Final price ÷ (1 + GST rate ÷ 100). For example, to remove 18% GST from a final price of ₹1,180: Base = 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 and GST = ₹180. The Inclusive tab on this calculator performs this automatically — just enter the MRP and select the rate.
Is GST applicable on exports?
Exports are zero-rated under GST, meaning they are taxed at 0% and registered exporters can claim refunds of all input tax credit paid on their inputs. This calculator is designed for standard domestic transactions. For export-related computations, special economic zone supplies, or exempt supply calculations, consult your chartered accountant or the official GST portal at gst.gov.in.
