What is the difference between probability and odds?

Probability is the ratio of favorable outcomes to total outcomes (e.g., 1/6 ≈ 16.7%). Odds compare favorable outcomes to unfavorable ones (e.g., 1 to 5). To convert: Odds = P ÷ (1 − P). Our calculator displays both formats automatically so you can use whichever is most useful for your situation.

How do I calculate the probability of an event happening at least once?

Use the complementary rule: P(at least once) = 1 − P(never). First find P(event does NOT occur in one trial), raise it to the power of the number of trials, then subtract from 1. For example, a 10% chance event over 10 independent trials: 1 − (0.90)^10 ≈ 65.1% chance it happens at least once.

Can I use this calculator for dependent events?

Yes — use the conditional probability mode. Enter P(A and B) and P(B) to get P(A|B), the probability of A given that B occurred. This handles dependent events like drawing cards without replacement, where the outcome of the first event directly changes the probability of the second event.

What does a probability of 0 or 1 mean?

A probability of 0 means the event is impossible — it can never occur under any circumstances. A probability of 1 (100%) means the event is certain — it will always occur. All real-world probabilities fall strictly between these two extremes. Values outside the 0–1 range indicate a calculation error.
