Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate stock profit with brokerage fees?

Subtract your total buy cost (shares × buy price + buy commission) from your total sell proceeds (shares × sell price − sell commission). The result is your net profit or loss. This calculator handles that arithmetic automatically once you enter all four inputs: buy price, sell price, share count, and both commissions.

What is a good ROI percentage for a stock trade?

There is no universal answer — it depends on how long you held the position. A 10% annual return matches the S&P 500 historical average. For a trade held one week, a 5% net ROI would be exceptional. The key metric is comparing your annualized return against benchmark alternatives like index funds or Treasury bonds.

How is the break-even price calculated?

Break-even price equals your total cost basis (purchase cost plus buy commission) divided by the number of shares. For example, buying 100 shares at $50.00 with a $5.00 commission gives a total cost of $5,005, and a break-even price of $50.05 per share. You need the stock to reach at least that price before selling to avoid a loss.

Does this calculator account for short selling?

For short selling, simply swap the buy and sell prices — enter your sell (short entry) price as the buy price and your buyback (cover) price as the sell price. Your profit on a short trade is the difference when the stock falls. Note that short selling also involves borrowing fees not captured in a standard commission field.

How are stock profits taxed in the United States?

Short-term capital gains (stocks held under 12 months) are taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate, between 10% and 37%. Long-term gains (held 12 months or more) are taxed at 0%, 15%, or 20% depending on your income. This calculator shows pre-tax profit; consult a tax professional to estimate your after-tax return.
