Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my maximum heart rate accurately?

The formula 220 minus your age gives a reasonable estimate, but individual variation can be ±10–12 bpm. For a more accurate measurement, perform a maximum effort field test after a thorough warm-up — such as three hard 3-minute intervals on a bike or treadmill — and note the highest heart rate you observe.

What heart rate zone is best for burning fat?

Zone 2 (60–70% of max heart rate) burns the highest percentage of calories from fat. However, higher zones burn more total calories per minute. For weight loss, a combination approach works best — build your aerobic base with Zone 2 training and add some Zone 4 intervals to increase overall calorie expenditure and metabolic rate.

How is the Karvonen formula different from simple percentage calculations?

The Karvonen method subtracts your resting heart rate from your max to find your heart rate reserve, applies the zone percentage to that reserve, then adds resting HR back. This accounts for your baseline fitness level. A fitter person with a lower resting heart rate will have slightly higher zone targets than a sedentary person of the same age.

How long should I spend in each heart rate zone per workout?

Zone 1 and 2 are sustainable for 60–120+ minutes and form the backbone of endurance training. Zone 3 efforts are manageable for 20–60 minutes. Zone 4 intervals typically last 4–20 minutes total. Zone 5 efforts last only seconds to 2 minutes. Most training plans use a polarized model — lots of Zone 1–2, some Zone 4–5, and minimal Zone 3.

Why does my heart rate vary so much on different days?

Heart rate is highly sensitive to hydration, sleep quality, caffeine intake, stress, temperature, and cumulative fatigue. A resting heart rate 5–7 bpm above your baseline is a reliable sign of overtraining or illness. Many athletes use elevated morning heart rate as a trigger to swap a planned hard session for an easy Zone 1 recovery workout.
