How to use Fuel Cost Calculator
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate fuel cost for a road trip?
Enter your trip distance, your vehicle fuel efficiency, and the current fuel price. The calculator multiplies distance by fuel efficiency to get litres or gallons needed, then multiplies by the fuel price to give the total cost. Enable the round trip toggle to automatically double the distance.
What is a good fuel efficiency for a car?
For petrol cars, 6 to 8 litres per 100km is considered good fuel efficiency for a family sedan. Under 6L/100km is excellent. SUVs typically use 8 to 12L/100km. Hybrid cars can achieve 4 to 5L/100km and electric vehicles use the equivalent of 1.5 to 2L/100km in energy cost.
How does speed affect fuel consumption?
Fuel consumption increases significantly above 90 to 100 km/h due to aerodynamic drag, which grows as the square of speed. Driving at 120 km/h uses roughly 20 percent more fuel than at 100 km/h. The most fuel-efficient highway speed for most cars is 80 to 90 km/h.
Does air conditioning significantly affect fuel use?
Yes. Air conditioning can increase fuel consumption by 5 to 20 percent depending on temperature, humidity, and driving conditions. The impact is greatest in slow city traffic where the engine is idling or at low RPM. At steady highway speeds the effect is smaller, around 3 to 5 percent.
How do I convert between L/100km, km/L, and MPG?
To convert km/L to L/100km: divide 100 by km/L. To convert MPG (UK) to L/100km: divide 282.5 by MPG. To convert MPG (US) to L/100km: divide 235.2 by MPG. Our calculator accepts all three units and converts automatically.
