How is my zodiac sign determined?
Your Western zodiac sign is determined by the position of the Sun at the time of your birth. The Sun moves through each of the 12 zodiac constellations over the course of a year, spending about 30 days in each one. Whatever sign the Sun occupied on your birthday is your sun sign.
What if my birthday falls on a cusp between two signs?
Cusp dates fall around the 20th to 22nd of each month when the Sun transitions between signs. The exact cutoff shifts slightly each year. If your birthday is in that range, use a calculator that takes your birth year into account to confirm which sign you belong to, since you can only be one sign.
Is there a difference between sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign?
Yes. Your sun sign reflects your core identity and is based on your birth date. Your moon sign governs emotions and requires your birth time. Your rising sign (ascendant) shapes your outward manner and needs both birth time and location. Most daily horoscopes refer to the sun sign only.
Does the zodiac sign calculator work for all birth years?
Yes. The Western zodiac repeats on a consistent annual cycle, so the tool works for any birth year. For borderline cusp dates, entering the full year gives a more precise result because the exact moment the Sun changes signs shifts by a few hours from year to year.
What is the difference between Western astrology and Vedic astrology zodiac signs?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, aligned with actual star positions. The two systems are offset by about 23 degrees, so your Vedic sign is often one sign earlier than your Western sign. This tool uses the Western tropical system.
