Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between my marginal tax rate and my effective tax rate?

Your marginal tax rate is the percentage applied to your last dollar of income — the highest bracket you reach. Your effective tax rate is total tax divided by total gross income. For most filers, the effective rate is significantly lower because the lower rates apply to the first portions of income earned.

Will earning more money push all of my income into a higher tax bracket?

No. Only the income above each bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate. If a raise pushes $1,000 above a bracket boundary, only that $1,000 faces the higher rate. Your prior income stays taxed at lower rates. You always take home more money after a raise, regardless of which bracket you cross into.

Should I subtract the standard deduction before entering my income into the calculator?

Most calculators handle this automatically via a toggle. If entering taxable income manually, subtract the standard deduction first — $14,600 for single filers and $29,200 for married filing jointly in 2024. Only itemize if your deductible expenses such as mortgage interest, state taxes, and charitable donations exceed the standard deduction amount.

Can contributing to a 401(k) lower my tax bracket?

Yes. Traditional 401(k) contributions are pre-tax and reduce your taxable income dollar for dollar. In 2024, the limit is $23,000 per year ($30,500 if age 50 or older). A large enough contribution can drop your taxable income below a bracket threshold, lowering both your marginal and effective tax rates meaningfully.

Does this calculator include self-employment tax and state income taxes?

No — this calculator covers federal income tax brackets only. Self-employed individuals also owe 15.3% self-employment tax on net earnings up to $168,600 in 2024. State income taxes are entirely separate and vary widely by state. Add both figures to your federal result for a complete picture of your total annual tax obligation.
