Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ideal reading level for a website?

Most website content should target a Flesch-Kincaid grade level of 7 to 9, equivalent to a middle-school reading level. Major news sites and successful e-commerce brands consistently write at grade 7–8 to maximize comprehension across their diverse audience, including non-native English speakers and busy readers.

How is reading level different from reading age?

Reading level is expressed as a US school grade number such as 8.0, while reading age is the same concept stated as an age — grade 8 equals approximately 13–14 years old. Both are calculated from the same formulas; reading age simply adds 5 to 6 years to the grade number depending on the school system used.

Why do different readability formulas give different scores?

Each formula weights syllables, words, and sentences differently. Flesch-Kincaid emphasizes syllable-to-word ratio; Gunning Fog counts complex polysyllabic words specifically; SMOG is tuned for health communication contexts. Using all four together gives a consensus estimate rather than relying on a single metric for a fuller picture of text difficulty.

Can I check readability of text in languages other than English?

Flesch-Kincaid and Gunning Fog were developed for English and are least accurate on other languages because syllable-counting heuristics differ. Adapted formulas exist for Spanish and French. Our tool is calibrated for English; treat scores on other-language text as rough approximations and validate with a native-language readability tool.

How long should my text sample be for accurate readability results?

Readability formulas are statistically reliable on samples of 100 words or more. The SMOG index specifically recommends 30 sentences as a minimum because it counts polysyllabic words in sentence batches. Short samples like a single paragraph may return scores that do not represent the overall difficulty of a full document.
