Number Guessing Game
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum number of guesses needed to win a 1–100 game?
The mathematically optimal strategy — always guessing the midpoint of the remaining range — guarantees you find any number between 1 and 100 in at most 7 guesses. This is because 2 raised to the power 7 equals 128, which is greater than 100, so 7 bisections always cover the full range.
Is the number truly random, or does the game favour certain numbers?
The secret number is generated using the browser's built-in pseudo-random number generator seeded at game start. Every integer within your chosen range has an equal probability of being selected. There is no bias toward the middle, edges, or any particular value — every round is a fresh, fair draw.
Can I change the number range mid-game?
No. Once you click Start Game the range is locked and a secret number is chosen. Changing the range mid-round would invalidate any guesses already made. To play a different range, click New Game first, update the minimum and maximum fields, and then start a fresh round with the new settings.
What happens if I enter a number outside the range?
The tool will alert you that your guess is out of bounds and will not count that attempt against your guess total. This prevents accidental typos from unfairly penalising your score. You can re-enter a valid number within the allowed range to continue playing without losing a turn.
Is this game good for children learning maths?
Yes — it is excellent for ages 6 and up. Younger children practice number ordering and counting while older children intuitively discover binary search and probability. Teachers use number guessing games to introduce concepts like greater-than and less-than, estimation, and logical deduction in a low-pressure, engaging format.
