How to use Name Generator
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I generate Indian names specifically?
Yes. Select "Indian" from the origin filter. The generator produces names from major Indian naming traditions: Sanskrit-origin Hindu names (male: Arjun, Rohan, Vikram; female: Priya, Ananya, Divya), Muslim names common in India (Aryan, Zara, Farhan), South Indian names with different phonetic patterns (Karthik, Lakshmi, Venkat), and Sikh names (Harpreet, Gurpreet, Manpreet).
How do I find a good business name?
Use Business Name mode which combines techniques: descriptive names (directly state what you do: QuickPay, SwiftDeliver), invented words (Spotify, Kodak — no prior meaning), compound words (Facebook, YouTube), and metaphor names (Amazon — scale, Jaguar — speed). Generate 20 names, filter for domain availability (check a registrar), and eliminate names that are hard to spell, pronounce, or remember.
Can I use this for fictional character names in a novel or game?
Yes — Character mode is specifically designed for fiction. Genre presets handle the stylistic conventions of each setting: Fantasy names follow phoneme patterns common in high fantasy (consonant clusters, elvish-style suffixes); Sci-fi names use technical sounds, hyphens, and numeric elements; Historical names match the phonology of the chosen period and culture.
How unique are the generated names?
Names are generated by combining real name components — roots, prefixes, suffixes — from the selected cultural tradition. Results include real existing names and plausible invented combinations. For unique character names unlikely to conflict with real people, use Fantasy or Sci-fi modes which generate invented names. For real-world person or baby names, all generated names are authentic names in their cultural tradition.
Can I generate names for test data in software development?
Yes. Generate realistic-looking person names (first name + last name) for database testing, UI mockups, demo accounts, or synthetic datasets. Select a consistent origin for cultural coherence in your test data. The names are common enough to look realistic but generated fresh each time. For large-scale test data generation (thousands of records), consider a programmatic API rather than a browser tool.
