How to use Flip Image
Frequently Asked Questions
What image formats does the flip tool support?
Input formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP, and static GIF. Animated GIFs are loaded as static (first frame only). Output formats: PNG (best for images with transparency, sharp edges, or text) and JPEG (smaller file size for photographs). WebP output is not currently available, but PNG and JPEG cover the vast majority of use cases.
Does flipping an image reduce its quality?
No. Flipping is a lossless geometric transformation — it rearranges pixels without any resampling or compression. If you download as PNG, which is lossless, quality is preserved exactly. If you download as JPEG, a small amount of recompression occurs — set the JPEG quality slider to 95+ to keep it visually identical to the original.
What is the difference between flipping and rotating an image?
Flipping mirrors the image across an axis — horizontal flip creates a left-right mirror, vertical flip creates an up-down mirror. Rotating turns the image around a central point: 90° clockwise tilts the entire image sideways, 180° turns it upside down. A 180° rotation is equivalent to flipping both horizontally and vertically simultaneously.
Why would I need to flip a selfie or portrait photo?
Smartphone front cameras capture images as mirror images — what you see on screen is what you see in a mirror, not how others see you. Some people prefer to flip their selfies to show the non-mirrored view, which is how you actually appear to others. Text in selfies (on clothing, signs, or books) also appears backwards until flipped.
Can I flip a transparent PNG and keep the transparency?
Yes. Choose PNG as the output format. The canvas preserves the alpha channel during flipping, so any transparent areas in the original are correctly maintained in the flipped output. Choosing JPEG output would convert transparency to white (or black on some systems), since JPEG does not support alpha channels.
